HOMEGROWN MUSIC LISTINGS

February 2005

Homegrown Music is WVIA-FM's exclusive series which each week showcases the talents of regional contemporary music artists in recordings produced in the WVIA-FM studios by series host George Graham. Homegrown Music (HGM), presents new performances most Tuesdays at 9:00 PM. February's special feature is a Homegrown Music Concert on the 21at with the band Cantinero. Further information on Homegrown Music may be obtained via the World Wide Web at http://homegrownmusic.info

Feb. 1 American Horse. Led by guitarist, vocalist and composer David Kuffa from Tunkhannock, PA, American Horse is a rock trio whose music runs from roots-rock to alternative. They make their series debut with a set of original pieces.

Feb. 8 Dave Isaacs Trio. Versatile artist Dave Isaacs maintains at least three musical outlets: his nationally acclaimed roots rock band Jackalope Junction, performing as a solo acoustic singer-songwriter, and playing electric instrumental jazz-rock fusion. After his two previous appearances on Homegrown Music in an acoustic setting, this time, he combines two facets of his career, performing some rock and fusion with original compositions including vocals.

Feb. 15 Barefoot. A distinctive young acoustic rock band from the Wyoming Valley, Barefoot combines bluegrass instrumentation such as mandolin and fiddle with a rock energy level and strong drum-driven rhythms. Performing original compositions, Barefoot makes first-rate music that defies ready categorization.

Feb. 21 A Homegrown Music Concert with CANTINERO and KATE MORRISSEY. WVIA's unique series of monthly live concert-broadcasts continues with a group that has attracted attention on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as a fine pianist-singer-songwriter.

British native Christopher Hicken, the creative force behind Cantinero, first formed a band in the UK in the 1980s, but moved to the US in 1993, where his brand of smart, Beatles-influenced rock and pop eventually found an audience. Cantinero is the group formed by Hicken (whose nickname was given to the group) to perform his songs that have been winning rave reviews on the new CD Championship Boxing. The CD was chosen for a Mixed Bag weekly album review in December. After WVIA's listeners have been hearing Cantinero's CD, now they will get a chance to hear the music live as part of this month's two-hour concert.

Kate Morrissey, of Bellefont, PA, formerly from South Dakota, is an articulate songwriter whose often beautiful songs sometimes evoke the wide-open spaces of her former home. Her studio recording from late last year on Homegrown Music was much acclaimed. Her outstanding vocals and tasteful piano playing combine to make for what promises to be memorable live performance.

As usual, WVIA's listeners are invited to attend the concert at the station's Public Broadcasting Center headquarters. Free audience seating arrangements are available by phoning 570-655-2808. (Note: Start time 8:00 PM.)

Feb. 22 Rhino Campground. From the Lehigh Valley and Poconos, Rhino Campground serves up their own brand of funky jazz-rock fusion music with classy musicianship and first-rate vocals. Led by drummer Wayne “Paco” Maura, Rhino Campground performs a tasty batch of original music.
