HOMEGROWN MUSIC LISTINGS

June 2005

Homegrown Music is WVIA-FM's exclusive series which each week showcases the talents of regional contemporary music artists in recordings produced in the WVIA-FM studios by series host George Graham. Homegrown Music (HGM), presents new performances most Tuesdays at 9:00 PM. June includes a Homegrown Music Concert with the Celtic-influenced band Black Bear Crossing and regional singer-songwriter "K8." Further information on Homegrown Music may be obtained via the World Wide Web at http://homegrownmusic.info

June 7 Tony Merker. From Wapwallopen, PA, Tony Merker creates first-rate country-folk, with the feeling of old-time country music, but with the lyrical sophistication of folksingers. He makes his Homegrown Music debut with a great collection of original songs performed in a solo acoustic setting.

June 14 Bob and Tanja Fletcher. Bob Fletcher was one of the very first musicians to appear on Homegrown Music nearly 30 years ago. He and his musical partner and wife Tanja Fletcher, together known as Genuine Folk, have been staying true to the influence of Woody Guthrie and the traditions of folk music for all these years. The Fletchers perform a collection of original songs, which in the Guthrie tradition, often address social issues, in this Encore from 2003.

June 20 A Homegrown Music Concert with BLACK BEAR CROSSING and "K8." WVIA's series of monthly live two-hour concert-broadcasts continues with Willamsport-area Celtic group, and a Wilkes-Barre singer-songwriter and rocker who has been attracting a good deal of attention.

Black Bear Crossing is a distinctive group that combines Celtic with American Appalachian influences. With instruments including hammered dulcimer, Celtic harp, concertina and flute the group performs a delightful mix of traditional and original instrumental music.

"K8" (pronounced "Kate") as she calls herself, released a CD last year produced by and featuring members of the Badlees, and has been attracting a fans in Northeastern Pennsylvania and wider areas through her touring. She'll be making her Homegrown Music debut with her astute original songs.

As usual, WVIA's listeners are invited to attend the concert at the station's Public Broadcasting Center headquarters. Admission is free by advance reservation on a first-come-first-served basis. Phone 570-655-2808 for reservations. Note: Start time 8:00 PM.

June 21 Kenny Young and the Eggplants. One of the most hilarious comedic bands around, Kenny Young and his trio perform songs about caffeine-enhanced frogs, continents of vegetables and badminton-playing badgers. They perform a collection of their very clever novelty songs that both kids and grown-ups can enjoy. (Encore from 2003.)

June 28 Jeff Callahan. Distinctive New Jersey singer-songwriter Jeff Callahan returns for his second appearance on Homegrown Music with his lyrically fascinating songs. His CD from last year Woebegone continues to receive positive reviews. He is joined by jazz-rock fusion guitarist extraordinaire BD Lenz in a two acoustic guitar configuration.
