Homegrown Music is WVIA-FM's exclusive series which each week showcases the talents of regional contemporary music artists in recordings produced in the WVIA-FM studios by series host George Graham. Apr. 1 An April Fool's Anthology. For the first of April, Homegrown Music producer George Graham goes into the archive to put together a collection of humorous, novelty, satirical and downright weird songs.

Apr. 8 A Homegrown Concert Clips Special. In connection with WVIA's annual spring membership drive, this week's segment features some memorable excerpts and highlights from the Homegrown Music monthly live concert series, spotlighting the wide range of exceptional performances that have taken place before live audiences at WVIA.

Apr. 14 A Homegrown Music Live Concert with BOB MALONE and JULIA JOSEPH. WVIA's unique series of live monthly concert-broadcasts from the station's new studio-theater continues with performances by two outstanding and rather different singer-songwriters.

Bob Malone combines the lyrical wit of Randy Newman with a virtuosic boogie-woogie and New Orleans piano style. After solo appearances on the series, he returns with a full band to perform his great songs that have attracted audiences nationally.

Julia Joseph is a talented singer-songwriter with a breezy, jazzy style marked by intelligent lyrics and very appealing vocals. She will be joined by her band including bassist Jeff Eyrich of Dave's True Story.

The two-hour concert takes place live on WVIA-FM before a audience in the new WVIA studio theater. Free audience seating is available through advance reservations, which may be obtained by calling 570-655-2808 or on the web at http://www.wvia.org. Note: Start time 8:00 PM.

Apr. 15 A Homegrown Music Folksingers Anthology. This week, the series presents a collection of recent performances by outstanding regional folk-oriented singer-songwiters, with acoustic instrumentation and lyrics that tell a story or make observations on the state of the world.

Apr. 23 -- Note Special Day because of election coverage EJ Oullette and Crazy Maggy. Violinist and singer-songwriter EJ Oullette and his band Crazy Maggy perform energetic, mostly electric music, ranging from original rock tunes to traditional fiddle tunes. Their recent CD Rock the Bow 5.0 has been getting national recognition. They make their Homegrown Music debut with some brand new music, not yet released on CD.

Marcus Eaton at WVIA

Apr. 29 A special guest appearance by Marcus Eaton. Idaho-based guitarist, composer and vocalist Marcus Eaton last year released The Story of Now, which won the Graham Award for best CD of 2007 on Mixed Bag. Recently, Eaton has been performing extensively in the Northeast, so he stopped by to pay a visit to the series. It's not exactly Homegrown this time, but the music is quite remarkable. He performs a set of brand new pieces marked by his fascinating. rhythmically intricate style and his impressive acoustic guitar technique. With a little help from technology he performs rich arrangements of his music by himself in real time.

Apr. 30 A Homegrown Jazz Special with HOTTER THAN THAT. This is a great quartet of young musicians -- two still in high school -- who perform spirited versions of traditional jazz in the style of Jellyroll Morton, Fats Waller or Bix Beiderbecke. Featured on piano and vocals is Drew Nugent, a Bloomsburg University student, who a couple of years ago was a national winner on the Prairie Home Companion teenage talent contest. They make their memorable debut on the program with a set of venerable jazz standards and novelty songs. (Note: Start time 7:00 PM, during WVIA's All That Jazz.)
