Homegrown Music is WVIA-FM's exclusive series which each week showcases the talents of regional contemporary music artists in recordings produced in the WVIA-FM studios by series host George Graham. Homegrown Music (HGM), presents new performances most Tuesdays at 9:00 PM. Special features during October include a live concert on the 3rd. Homegrown Music will be preempted on November 4 for election coverage. Nov. 3 A Homegrown Music Concert with TONY DEMARCO and E.G. KIGHT. On Election Day Eve, WVIA-FM presents an eclectic edition of the station's unique radio concert series, with traditional Celtic music, and an acoustic performance by blues artist E.G. Kight.

A Brooklyn, NY, native, fiddler Tony DeMarco has become one of the most acclaimed American-born Celtic musicians. Active since the 1970s, he has recorded with such artists as Celtic Thunder, Steve Earle, Gillians Welch and Black 47. When not playing Celtic music, DeMarco has had a career as a commodities trader on Wall Street. After a lengthy career as a "sideman" he released his debut CD earlier this year on the Smithsonian Folkways label. He makes his Homegrown Music debut with an all-star band.

E.G. Kight

E.G. Kight also has an interesting career. Known as the "Georgia Songbird," she began her career as a country singer, sharing the stage with the likes of George Jones and Jerry Lee Lewis. But when she heard the great blues singer Koko Taylor, she was smitten and turned wholeheartedly to the blues, and would eventually write songs that were recorded by Ms. Taylor. A veteran of several performances at the Billtown Blues Festival, she is a regular in the Williamsport area, where her latest CD was recorded. After a studio session on Homegrown Music in 2003, she returns to WVIA for her first live HGM concert performance.

As usual, the two-hour concert will be broadcast before a live audience at the new WVIA studio theater. Free audience reservations may be made at the WVIA website at http://www.wvia.org or by phone at 570-655-2808. (Note start time: 8:00 PM).

Nov. 11 Smash Palace. This long-running Eastern PA/Southern NJ band found recent success after a performance at the legendary Cavern Club in Liverpool, England, where the Beatles were discovered. The group's CD Everybody Comes and Goes has been winning much praise, including on WVIA's Mixed Bag weekly album review series. This encore presents the band's late 2006 session which some of the songs that would appear on Everybody Comes and Goes.

Jann Klose at WVIA

Nov. 18 Jann Klose. Making his Homegrown Music debut, Jann Klose has a fascinating multicultural background. Born in Germany, he spent part of his childhood in Nairobi, Kenya, then moved to South Africa. He attended high school in Cleveland, Ohio, there he sang with the Cleveland Opera Chorus. He has a theatrical career, working in the Broadway touring company of Jekyll and Hyde," and toured Europe in a prominent role in "Jesus Chris Superstar." His songs have been included in the film "Dead Broke," and in commercial for Saab cars in France. His current CD Reverie has been featured on WVIA's Mixed Bag. On this HGM appearance, he performs his new original songs in a solo acoustic setting.

Nov. 19 A Homegrown Jazz Special with SBW. A jazz quartet featuring sons of two well-known jazz musicians, Adam Niewood, son of saxophonist Gerry Niewood, and bassist Miles Brown, son of guitarist Steve Brown. With guitarist Gene Segal and drummer Joe Cangelosi, SBW returns to Homegrown Music for a new collection of original pieces. Niewood is also heard on EWI (electronic wind instrument) and the rare C-melody sax. (Note heard during WVIA's All That Jazz at 7:00 PM.)

Nov. 25 Electric Farm. Another gem from the Homegrown Music archive, this session goes back 15 years to the beginning of the long-running creative Lehigh Valley band Electric Farm, featuring the Joey Mutis and Kris Kehr.
