Homegrown Music is WVIA-FM's exclusive series which each week showcases the talents of regional contemporary music artists in recordings produced in the WVIA-FM studios by series host George Graham and is broadcast Tuesdays at 9:00 PM. Special features during January include a live concert on the 9th and an archive anthology segment on the 24th. Jan. 3 Marcus Eaton Trio. A remarkable guitarist and singer-songwriter, Marcus Eaton has been touring nationally. His first CD with the group The Lobby in 2003 was on the Mixed Bag Best of the Year, and his CDs since then have won almost universal praise for their art-rock style musical sophistication, appealing vocals and lyrically interesting songs. This encore of his trio's 2010 Homegrown Music session spotlights still-new, as-yet unreleased music.

Jan. 9 A Homegrown Music Concert with THE SULTANS OF STRING. WVIA's monthly series of live concert broadcasts continues with an evening of eclectic virtuosity.

Sultans of String

The Sultans of String are an international touring group who combine styles ranging from Celtic to flamenco to Django-Reinhardt style swing, and manage to include very distinctive acoustic covers of rock and other styles. Led by violinist Chris McKhool, the Sultans of String have been attracting increasing attention in both the US and Canada for their breathtaking musicianship and complete ignorance of supposed stylistic boundaries. They will be performing two sets on their Homegrown Music concert debut. As usual, WVIA's supporting members and listeners are invited to attend the two-hour live broadcast in the station's Sordoni Theater. Jan. 10 The Fat Cats. A fine five-piece blues band from Northeastern PA performing original compositions in an encore of a session from 2005.

Jan. 17 Rogue Chimp, a very creative instrumental band from the Scranton area including synthesizers, techno beats as played on acoustic drums, plus a prominent violin. The band put in a live Homegrown Music concert in 2011. This is an encore of their second studio session from 2010.

Jan. 24 A Homegrown Music Deep Archive Sampler. HGM has been presenting regional artist performances from the WVIA studios weekly since 1976. As part of WVIA's winter fundraising drive, Homegrown Music spotlights some of the memorable, and often-requested performances from the last century.

Jan. 31 Jason Vo. Solo acoustic guitar instrumentalist Jason VoShaffer employs creative tapping and percussive techniques in the tradition of Michael Hedges for his distinctive original compositions. (Encore from 2010.)
