Homegrown Music is WVIA-FM's exclusive series which each week showcases the talents of regional contemporary music artists in recordings produced in the WVIA-FM studios by series host George Graham and is broadcast Tuesdays at 9:00 PM. Special features during August include two Homegrown Jazz segments, on the 1st and 22nd during WVIA's All That Jazz at 7:00 PM. Aug. 1 A Homegrown Jazz Special with BILL MAYS AND THE INVENTIONS
TRIO. World-renowned jazz pianist Bill Mays debuts a new
commissioned work: "Suite: Life's a Movie" with his unique Inventions Trio with
veteran trumpet player Marvin Stamm and cellist Alisa Horn. This is the third
extended suite that Mays has created for the trio, whose sound straddles
classical and jazz. After several appearances on Homegrown Music, Mays has
chosen WVIA's long-running performance series and its producer George Graham to
be the official debut recording of this new work. This special edition of All
That Jazz will also feature new original arrangements of compositions by jazz
greats Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk and Chick Corea. Note: This extended
segment will be heard from 7:00 to 8:10 PM on WVIA-FM.

Aug. 7 Bob Perry Band. From the Homegrown Music Archive comes this 2000 session with New Jersey roots-rocker Bob Perry and his band. Known in the 1980s as a member of the popular national band Winter Hours, Perry has also been a founder of Cropduster Records, an independent label. This session features some of his appealing original compositions backed by a tight rock quartet.
Aug. 14 Josh Pratt. A fine singer-songwriter who is not only from Northeastern Pennsylvania, but many of his songs are written about locations in the region. His memorable compositions frequently capture the flavor of the area in a subtle, poetic manner in this 2004 Homegrown Music session.
Aug. 22 A Homegrown Jazz Special with THE JAY VONADA TRIO. Trombonist Jay Vonada, from Central PA, makes his Homegrown Music debut with an appealing trio together with organist Alex Sell and drummer Kevin Lowe. They perform material ranging from funky original pieces to jazz standard ballads. Note: Start time: 7:00 PM. |
