Dave Liebman and Expansions
After over 20 years with the David Liebman Group, the Stroudsburg resident, and world traveling jazz saxophonist has a new ensemble, Expansions, featuring musicians of different generations. Maintaining bass great Tony Marino, Liebman is now working with a two musicians who a few years ago were members of the COTA Cats high school band that appears at the Delaware Water Gap Celebration of the Arts, and who since then have become world-class musicians. They include pianist Bobby Avey, and (Dr.) Matt Vashlishan on sax and reeds. The drummer is Alex Ritz.

A welcome guest several times on the WVIA series going back over 15 years, Dave Liebman will be making his first Homegrown Music appearance with the new group, and since he was named winner of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship. (America's highest jazz honor.)

The group will be doing two sets, and it promises to be an evening of exciting, virtuosic jazz.

The two-hour concert-broadcast will be presented live on WVIA-FM. Limited free audience seating is available by reservation on a first-come-first served basis for WVIA's members and listeners. Reservations may be made at the WVIA website at http://www.wvia.org/hi-deftheaterentry or by phone at 570-655-2808. Note: Start time: 8:00 PM.

Nov. 12 OTiS. A first-rate seven-piece funk band with horns, OTiS was led by Craig Alan. They released a well-received album in 2012, but broke up later that year. So this encore of their summer 2012 Homegrown Music session represents the band at their super-tight best, with danceable, jazzy music and great original songs.

Van Wagner at WVIA

Nov. 19 Van Wagner. A prolific folk singer-songwriter from Danville who has written extensively about the region and its mining tradition, Van Wagner returns to Homegrown Music after an extended absence with a new collection of his astute, often clever songs, performed in his appealing style.

Nov. 26 Po Boyz. A great retro-sounding soul and funk-oriented organ trio, Po Boyz released a CD called Country Funk in 2010 which was a featured Weekly Album Review on WVIA's Mixed Bag. Po Boyz' organist Keith Hollis has toured and recorded with Joss Stone and the late soul great Solomon Burke. The band made their Homegrown Music debut in 2011, and liked it so much that they released it separately. That memorable session is encored in this segment.
