May 3 Zak Sobel. Singer-songwriter Zak Sobel first appeared on Homegrown Music in 2011 when he was a student at Penn State. Now working a touring musician based in New York, Sobel returned to WVIA in 2019 for a new set of original songs in both acoustic and electric settings. |
May 10 Kenny Young and the Eggplants. From the Homegrown Music archive comes this charmingly wacky group known for their hilarious but literate songs. This 2003 session includes some choice songs about a badminton-playing badger/filmmaker, mutant frogs, and a history-changing haircut, packed with plenty of groan-inducing musical puns. Kenny Young and the Eggplants continue to create funny songs to this day, releasing periodic albums that have been finding fans internationally -- or at least leaving them perplexed. |
May 17 Bella Ruse. The clever, quirky wife-husband duo of Kay Gillette and Joseph Barker create witty songs and perform them on a motley collection of instruments including toy piano, kazoos and a manual typewriter. |
May 24 A Homegrown Concert Encore with THE DAVE KEYES BAND. Dave Keyes is one of the most ubiquitous blues pianists on the scene, working with artists like Popa Chubby, the late Bo Diddley, Tracy Nelson, Gladys Knight, and the Alexis P. Suter Band in their Homegrown Music concert. He has released six albums on his own. The most recent The Healing was featured on the Mixed Bag album review series. He appears leading his own group in a memorable live concert in April 2019. |
May 31 The Electric Farm. Another gem from the Homegrown Music archive, this Lehigh Valley Band has existed on and off for many years, led by principal composer and lead vocalist Joey Mutis III. This segment features music from some their early 1990s Homegrown Music sessions. |
